Assessment and Testing Centers

For any of the online proctoring services, students must have a valid ID. These are the accepted ID cards: 

  • State issued photo ID: state driver’s license, state motor vehicle ID cards, state employee ID card
  • Federal (U.S.) issued photo ID: military IDs, passports (current International passports can be considered), Federal employee ID card, lawful permanent resident card (green card)
  • County: current MC student ID, current public school IDs (high school ID cards), county employee ID card

Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English Placement Testing

Montgomery College offers Next-Generation ACCUPLACER  English for placement in English and other courses. Students with classic ACCUPLACER English or Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English scores should transfer their scores for review to the Office of Records and Registration

Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English scores help counselors and academic advisers recommend courses that are appropriate for you.

The Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English placement test is untimed. If you require disability-related accommodations, contact the Disability Support 名门棋牌 (DSS) Office.

Who takes Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English?

If your first language is American English or you have attended a US school for 10 or more years (elementary, middle, high school), you will take the Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English  placement test. 

New students may be exempt from taking the Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English. Read the )  document for specific details.

What is Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English?

The Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English is a computerized self-paced, untimed test. The test is delivered in a multiple choice format.  Your scores will determine which English courses you are eligible to take. The Next-Generation ACCUPLACER  English has two parts:

  1. Next-Generation Reading:  (20 questions) assesses the test-taker’s ability to derive meaning from a range of texts and to determine the meaning of words and phrases in short and extended contexts.
  2. Next-Generation Writing:  (25 questions) evaluates a test-taker’s ability to revise and edit multi-paragraph text. 

Students are allowed one retake of the Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English test after meeting with a counselor or advisor. 

 How Do I Schedule my Next-Generation ACCUPLACER English test?

You will need this information to make an appointment: 

  • Current email address
  • M number (Montgomery College student ID number)
  • The campus at which you want to take the test

You will receive a confirmation email after you make an appointment. You may only schedule individual appointments.

How Will I Get my Test Scores?

Assessment Center staff will provide instructions after you complete your test. Students will need to complete an online academic orientation through My MC before meeting with an advisor. Visit the Academic Orientation webpage for more information.

Test Taking Tips

  • For placement tests, familiarize yourself with the types of questions and topics that will be covered by using the free online ACCUPLACER app.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early to the Assessment Center to allow time to ask questions and receive instructions prior to the test.
  • Bring a valid photo ID. See list of authorized photo IDs above.
  • Placement tests are untimed.

Students interested in TAKING the GED? test at Montgomery College should complete the following steps:

STEP 1: REVIEW MARYLAND STATE GED? TESTING REQUIREMENTS

  • You must be a Maryland state resident to take the GED? Test in Maryland
  • You must be at least 19 years old, or have officially withdrawn from High School by submitting a Withdrawal/Exception Form to the Maryland GED? Office.
  • Visit the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation website for state requirements and forms:

Note: Non-state residents cannot complete the GED? test in Maryland

STEP 2: CREATE A GED? ACCOUNT TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT ONLINE

  • Visit to create your profile. If needed, request testing accommodations directly with GED?
  • Schedule your appointment and the exam modules ($11.25 per module) you want to complete; recommendation: no more than two modules per appointment
  • Select Montgomery College for your appointment; available testing dates and times will appear depending on your campus selection

STEP 3: ATTEND AND COMPLETE YOUR GED? APPOINTMENT

  • Report to the Montgomery College Assessment Center where you appointment is schedule at least 15 minutes beforehand
  • Bring an accepted, current form of identification to your GED? test appointment: 
    Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration driver’s license, learner’s permit or identification card, or a current active duty military identification card
  • Visit the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation website for identification waiver form if needed:

Note: No other forms of ID will be accepted without an approved identification waiver

WHAT IS THE GED? TEST?

The General Educational Development (GED?) test is completed on the computer, and covers four subjects in four separate exam modules

The GED? exam modules are:

  • Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA): 155 minutes
  • Mathematical Reasoning: 120 minutes
  • Science: 95 minutes
  • Social Studies: 75 minutes

With the exception of the RLA exam, GED? exam modules can completed in English or Spanish. Exam items include multiple choice, short response, fill-in-the blank, drop-down, drag-and-drop, and extended response.

WHAT IS A PASSING SCORE ON THE GED? TEST? 

The GED? test has a passing score of 145 for each module. To earn your Maryland high school equivalency, you will need to score 145 on all four modules.

Students who achieve a score of 165 or higher in the Reasoning Through Language Arts and/or Mathematical Reasoning modules are eligible to enroll in college-level English and mathematics courses at Montgomery College.

Students with Documented Disabilities

ALL IN-PERSON TESTING SERVICES ARE SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY. Contact your professor and DSS counselor for information about scheduling your test.

 If you require special accommodations, contact the Disability Support 名门棋牌 (DSS) Office on the campus where you plan to enroll. Contact the DSS office prior to taking an exam in the Assessment Center.
